# Setting Healthy Boundaries A boundary is a limit you set to protect your time, energy, body, or values. Boundaries are not punishments — they are information about what you will and won't accept. ## The three parts of a boundary 1. **The limit** — what you will not tolerate 2. **The request** — what you want instead 3. **The consequence** — what you'll do if the limit is crossed ## Scripts you can use - "I'm not available for that conversation. If it continues, I'll leave the room." - "I'm turning my phone off at 9pm. I'll respond in the morning." - "I won't discuss my weight. Please change the subject." - "I love you, and I'm not lending money right now." ## When you feel guilty Guilt is normal, especially early on. It doesn't mean the boundary is wrong — it means it's new. Guilt fades as the boundary holds. ## Follow through A boundary without follow-through becomes a suggestion. Decide the consequence before you need it, and be willing to enforce it every time.
