What we cover
Narcissistic behavior is usually described as a set of traits, as though it were weather. In practice it operates as a method, and methods have steps. This episode walks the first three — targeting, testing, and extraction — because the earlier you can see the sequence, the cheaper it is to step out of it. Not a diagnosis: a description of observable behavior that leaves evidence.
- Why the pattern selects for resourcefulness and generosity, not weakness
- How the speed of early intimacy is the first visible anomaly
- The cheap early probes: what a stepped-over one-inch boundary is actually measuring
- Why the reaction to a small, reasonable 'no' is the most information-dense moment in the early relationship
- The one-way ledger of extraction — and what the good times were actually for
Try this
Say no to something small and low-stakes, then simply watch what the disappointment does. You are not looking for agreement — a healthy person can be disappointed by a no. You are watching whether the disappointment gets absorbed or returned to you as punishment. Charm can be performed for months; the moment of a thwarted want is where the performance is thinnest.
A note on safety
If recognizing this sequence means recognizing your own relationship, that recognition is information, not a verdict — and if the situation at home is unsafe, treat it as a safety issue and use the planning and crisis resources linked below.
